Join the editors and contributors of a new book publication, The Material World of Modern Segregation: St. Louis in the Long Era of Ferguson, for celebratory events highlighting the discoveries made by eighteen scholars of urban experience about the lived realities of race and segregation in St. Louis.

Each essay in the collection––a dedicated volume of The Common Reader: A Journal of the Essay available in print and online––explores an especially resonant material site and its embedded racial histories. Together, they offer a transformative new way of engaging St. Louis, its histories of race, space, and memory, and the lived experiences of segregation.
Co-edited by Iver Bernstein (History, former AMCS Director) and Heidi Kolk (Sam Fox School of Design, former AMCS Assistant Director), it also features work by former AMCS Inequality and Identity postdoc Jasmine Mahmoud (now at University of Washington-Seattle), AMCS Major alum (’14) and Rhodes Scholar Joshua Aiken (currently a Yale J.D./Ph.D. candidate), and several AMCS-affiliated faculty, among them Patrick Burke (Dept. of Music) and David Cunningham (Dept. of Sociology).
