WashU professor Carl Craver and WashU & Slavery Project postdoc Kelly Schmidt team up with students through the Humanities Digital Workshop to build a search engine facilitating research on enslavement in St. Louis.
The St. Louis Integrated Database of Enslavement (SLIDE) makes key records of enslavement in St. Louis searchable online. SLIDE includes records from the Freedom License database, covering Freedom Licenses filed in the county of St. Louis, Missouri between 1835 and 1865; emancipations registered in the St. Louis Circuit Court from 1817-1865; court-ordered sales of enslaved people from 1828 to 1864; enslaved people ennumerated in the 1830 and 1840 U.S. Census; and the slave schedules of the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Census. To learn more about the project team and design, and to access the search engine, visit SLIDE.
