In this CRE2 award-winning study and Storymap, Adam Teich examines the life story of Lucinda Patterson, a formerly enslaved woman who helped build a powerful if largely forgotten network of black educators and educational institutions in St. Louis.
"Lucinda Patterson: Housing Black Education" won the 2020-2021 Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity (CRE2) Award for Best Undergraduate Research Paper Engaging St. Louis. This annual award recognizes the work of a Washington University undergraduate in any academic field, for excellence in research that takes the city or region of St. Louis as its primary subject of inquiry, with an emphasis on race and/or ethnicity. The winner receives an award of $500 for their work.
