Emory's “In the Wake of Slavery and Dispossession" Symposium

As a member of the global consortium of Universities Studying Slavery (USS), the WashU & Slavery Project receives invitations to participate in various events hosted by consortium members throughout the year. These opportunities are shared with WashU & Slavery Project contacts through our email lists, website and other communications. 

Registration is now open for the symposium “In the Wake of Slavery and Dispossession: Emory, Racism, and the Journey Towards Restorative Justice,” set for Sept. 29 through Oct. 1, 2021, and hosted by Emory University. The symposium will take place in a hybrid format on Emory’s Atlanta and Oxford campuses, with in-person and virtual sessions, as well as physical and digital exhibits. The symposium is open to the public at no charge.

Many universities are examining their histories and discovering their connections to slave labor and Indigenous dispossession. This symposium will highlight the ongoing efforts and research in the areas of slavery, dispossession, and restorative justice, with a focus on the legacy of racism and its enduring effects at Emory University. The sessions will include creative interpretations and dialogue, with a primary focus on the perspectives of Black, Native American, and Indigenous peoples.

Confronting Slavery & Higher Education - Americanist Dinner Forum

In Spring 2021 Washington University in St. Louis joined the global consortium of Universities Studying Slavery (USS), where academic institutions study and address their entanglements with histories of slavery and legacies of inequality in higher education and university communities. WashU is the third institution in greater St. Louis to join USS, following Saint Louis University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

In this Americanist Dinner Forum, Washington University & Slavery Project director Prof. Geoff Ward joined Dr. Kelly Schmidt and Prof. Bryan Jack in a discussion of St. Louis Universities Studying Slavery. The three discussed origins and objectives of these initiatives, key insights to date, how they have engaged students and community, and how the projects might contribute to a broader reckoning with slavery and its legacy in our region. The event was moderated by AMCS Lecturer Zachary Manditch-Prottas.
